Preparing for an Alaskan Fishing Trip: What You Should Bring

If you’re unsure what to bring for your fishing expedition in Alaska, use the following guide. This packing list will help ensure you have the items you need to thoroughly enjoy your trip.

• Luggage: Many fishing charters in Alaska involve rustic settings. Due to these surroundings, duffel bags are often more suitable to the surroundings than luggage sets. For easiest luggage management, try to pack everything in one large, soft-sided bag.
• Day pack: In addition to your duffel bag, bring a day pack you can carry on your back. It should be an adequate size to carry anything you would want with you on a hike or on a fishing boat. These items might include a water bottle, lunch and rain gear.
• Rain gear: Don’t let a little precipitation spoil your Alaskan fishing trip. Be prepared with proper rain gear. Bring a nylon-coated suit with sealed seams. Avoid bulky, heavy rubberized gear, as this is cumbersome to carry. Also avoid plastic or vinyl ponchos or rain suits, as these tend to tear easily.
• Shoes: When it comes to packing shoes, think comfort and light weight. If your fishing expedition will include hiking, invest in a pair of rugged boots. Be sure your shoes are well broken in before your trip. You may also want to apply waterproofing compound to your footgear in advance.
• Clothing: Your wardrobe for the trip should be informal and comfortable. Layers are best, due to Alaska’s variable weather. Choose items made of synthetics or wool, since these can remain comfortable even if they get wet. Plan to bring pants as well as a pair of shorts, just in case the weather heats up. Stick with mostly long-sleeved shirts. Tight weaves and light colors are best for bug and sun protection. Include two pairs of wool or synthetic socks. For trips in the winter, bring two pairs of long underwear. Choose thermax, capilene or polypropylene rather than cotton. If cotton gets wet, it does not insulate.
• Jacket: gain, it’s important to be prepared to layer your apparel. A fleece or wool jacket are good options, as are an extra sweater. Wool or fleece vests are also good for early mornings on the water when there is still a slight night chill.
• Hats: Don’t forget a wool or synthetic fleece hat. You may also want a brimmed hat for sun protection.
• Gloves: Pair that hat with a set of wool or synthetic gloves. Your fingers will thank you as you fish.
• Medications: Be sure to bring any prescription medications with you on your fishing charter.
• Water bottle: Pack a one-quart water bottle to carry with you at all times.
• Flashlight: Bring a flashlight or headlamp if your Alaskan fishing trip is scheduled during a darker season.
• Insect repellent: Include a personal supply of insect repellent in your bag. Keep in mind that pumps and creams are more environmentally friendly than aerosol cans.
