Six Things You Should Bring on Your Alaskan Fishing Trip
The weather in Alaska can change quickly. One minute it’s sunny and the next minute the clouds have rolled in. For this reason it’s crucial that you’re prepared for all types of weather conditions when out on a boat fishing. No matter which fishing charter company you’ve booked with, they will all want you to wear the right outdoor clothing for the season because it’s essential for your safety, health and comfort.
Even if you’ve booked a charter for your next fishing excursion, and the company is supplying the fishing gear, there are still certain items you might want to pack to ensure a fun and comfortable experience. Below are a few important things you should bring with you on your Alaskan fishing trip:
- Fishing license: You must hold a fishing license and/or permit (and possibly a king stamp), whether you’re fishing on your own or on a charter fishing trip. Most charters do not include a license in the cost of the trip, but they are available for purchase online before you leave for your trip or, sometimes, for purchase in the fishing charter company’s office.
- Rain gear: Don’t assume the charter will provide rain gear. Even if they do, consider bringing your own so you know that it fits. Lightweight and two-piece raincoats are effective and, since temperatures and weather conditions change often out on the water, it’s recommended that you bring breathable gear and wear layers of clothing beneath it.
- Appropriate clothing: Your fishing charter will highly suggest you dress in layers so you’re prepared for all types of weather. Pack comfortable jeans, fleece pants, t-shirts, thin long-sleeve shirts, flannel shirts, an insulated jacket, wool sweaters and long underwear made of wool or polypropylene (cotton is not recommended). Bring fleece or wool gloves and warm wool knit caps.
- Footwear: Bring boots to wear on the fishing boat and while ashore that are comfortable, lightweight, water repellent and already broken in. Wear socks made of wool or synthetic materials, and bring extra pairs to ensure your feet stay happy and dry.
- Sun protection and insect repellent: When the sun is out in Alaska, it shines bright and reflects off the ocean water. This can cause sunburns easily, so make sure to bring a brimmed hat, wear polarized sunglasses to protect your eyes from sun glare and apply a strong sunscreen lotion. It’s best to be prepared with sun protection even if the sun is not out when you board the boat. To avoid mosquito bites, insect repellent is a must. Whether it’s a high-percent DEET or natural repellent cream, bring it with you on your fishing trip.
- Camera and binoculars: Don’t forget to bring a camera—plus extra batteries, memory cards or film—to take photographs, as well as a pair of high-quality binoculars! When you’re not fishing off the boat, you’ll get the chance to view Alaska’s gorgeous waters and landscapes.
